In one of the highest-profile envoy selections by the White House, US President Joe Biden seems to be poised to nominate Caroline Kennedy as the country’s ambassador to Australia, some people familiar with the matter told CNN.

In the Obama administration, the daughter of former President John F Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, had served as ambassador to Japan.

Kennedy is an ally, donor and longtime friend of Biden, who endorsed the President’s candidacy early in the campaign. She also spoke last summer at the Democratic convention.

A spokesperson of White House declined to comment on the matter. He said, after the completion of the vetting process and the notification to host countries, more ambassadors would be announced.

The appointment of Kennedy to Australia shows Biden administration is placing Asia-Pacific on a high priority as it deals with an increasingly assertive China on the world stage.

The US and Australia have been sharing close trade ties and a robust military relationship for a long time. These two countries are also a part of ‘Five Eyes alliance’. It is an intelligence sharing arrangement between the English-speaking democracies of the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

Washington (CNN) President Joe Biden is poised to nominate Caroline Kennedy to serve as ambassador to Australia, three people familiar with the search process told CNN, in one of the highest-profile envoy selections yet by the White House.

Kennedy, the daughter of former President John F. Kennedy, served as ambassador to Japan during the Obama administration. She is a longtime friend, ally and donor to Biden who endorsed the President’s candidacy early in the campaign and spoke last summer at the Democratic convention.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment, saying more ambassadors would be announced when the vetting process and the notification to host countries have been completed.

Kennedy’s appointment to Australia reflects the high priority the Biden administration is placing on the Asia-Pacific as it deals with an increasingly assertive China in the region and on the world stage. The US and Australia share close trade ties and a robust military relationship, fighting side by side in every major conflict since World War I. The two countries are also members of the “Five Eyes alliance,” an intelligence sharing arrangement between the English speaking democracies of the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

If confirmed, Kennedy would come to the job with prior experience specific to the region. A graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University Law School, Kennedy served as ambassador to Japan from 2013 to 2017 as an Obama administration appointee.

WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden plans to nominate Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, as U.S. ambassador to Australia, CNN reported on Friday, citing three unidentified people familiar with the process.

The White House declined to comment on the report.

Kennedy threw her support behind Biden’s 2020 presidential bid in February of that year, writing that the former vice president was more prepared for the job than his rivals.

Kennedy previously served as U.S. ambassador to Japan under Democratic former President Barack Obama. The first female U.S. ambassador to Japan, Kennedy was an early and prominent supporter of Obama in his initial quest for the presidency in 2008, and also campaigned for him.
