In a new example of breaking the glass ceiling, Akanksha Kumari became the first ever female mining engineer in India who is working with the underground coal mines. An employee of the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Akanksha has secured the proud spot of the first ever woman to work in the underground mines of in all these years of Coal India’s history.
Akanksha joined CCL at its Churi underground mines in the Jharkhand’s North Karanpura area and her achievement was shared by the social media handle of the CCL, a subsidiary of Coal India.
“A graduate of BIT Sindri, Ms Kumari broke the gender barriers by joining Churi UG mine, NK Area. She became the 1st women mining engineer in the history of CIL to work in underground mines," it said.

Akanksha’s achievements were hailed by netizens who called her a source of inspiration and her success a true example of female empowerment.

Akanksha’s achievement was also hailed by the Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Pralhad Joshi who called it a part of progressive governance that promoted gender equality and helped to generate more opportunities.

Akanksha is only the second mining engineer in Coal India Limited and the first woman who is now working in the underground coal mines. Hailing from Barkagaon in Hazaribagh, Akanksha was a student of Navodaya Vidyalaya and as she grew up in a mining belt, coal mining activities interested her since long and she decided to study mining engineering due to this at BIT Sindri, Dhanbad, a statement by the Bihar’s Press Information Bureau, Central Coalfields said.

Jharkhand’s Akanksha Kumari has become Coal India’s first woman mining engineer to work in an underground mine, Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) said on August 31. According to a social media post, Kumari is a graduate of Birsa Institue of Technology Sindri. The 25-year-old is the second female mining engineer in Coal India Ltd (CIL) and the first one to join CIL at its Churi underground mines in the North Karanpura area in Jharkhand.
In a statement, CCL said, “Women employees have been shouldering the responsibilities ranging from officer to doctor to security guard and even running heavy machines like dumper and shovel and have excelled in each role”.
“However, this is the first time when the core mining activity of one of the biggest coal mining companies of the world will witness this progressive change. The enormity of her achievement can be gauged by the fact that Akanksha is the second mining engineer in the Maharatna conglomerate Coal India Limited and the first woman to work in an underground coal mine," it added.

According to PTI, Kumari is a resident of barkagaon in Hazaribagh district. She pursued primary and secondary education in Navodaya Vidyalaya. As she belongs to a mining belt, she had witnessed coal mining activities from close quarters. Kumari developed a natural inquisitiveness towards mines since childhood, which led her to opt for mining engineering at Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri.
Prior to CCL, Kumari had worked for three years in Hindustan Zinc Limited’s Balaria mines in Rajasthan. The statement said that Kumari credits her family for unflinching support to follow her dreams. She said that joining CIL was the fulfilment of her childhood dream. She now hopes to deliver her best for the company.
‘Historic moment’
Following the announcement, Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, congratulated Ms Kumari on her achievement and called it a part of progressive governance. BJP MP PC Mohan also hailed it as a “historic moment for gender representation”. The Ministry of Coal also congratulated the engineer and wrote: “You are an inspiration to many women”.

Reaching new heights of gender representation, Jharkhand’s Akanksha Kumari has become India’s first ever female mining engineer to work in underground mines. She joined Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) - a subsidiary of Coal India - at its Churi underground mines in the North Karanpura area of Jharkhand. Her appointment as a mining engineer was hailed across social media as she became the first woman mining engineer to join CCL.
The proud announcement was shared on CCL’s official Twitter handle. It read, “CCL gets its first ever #women mining engineer, Ms Akanksha Kumari. A graduate of BIT Sindri, Ms Kumari broke the gender barriers by joining Churi UG mine, NK Area. She became the 1st women mining engineer in the history of CIL to work in underground mines. Salute to #WomenPower.”
A press statement was also issued which stated that though CCL has several women in positions running heavy machinery or are doctors, this is “the first time when the core mining activity of one of the biggest coal mining companies of the world will witness this progressive change.”

It further read, “The enormity of her achievement can be gauged by the fact that Akanksha is the second mining engineer in the Maharatna conglomerate Coal India Limited and the first woman to work in an underground coal mine.” The official Twitter account of India’s Ministry of Coal also hailed Kumari on her historic feat, calling her an inspiration.
