Indonesia then drew level in the women’s singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung defeating Kisona Selvaduray 22-20, 18-21, 21-19.

Lee Zii Jia then reestablished Malaysia’s lead in the men’s singles, beating Anthony Ginting 21-11, 21-16 in a sumptuous 44 minutes, before Indonesia again pegged back their rivals through Olympic champions Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu in the women’s doubles, Polii and Rahayu squeezing past Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 22-20, 17-21, 21-18.

In the final match of the contest, the mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron and Cheah Yee See beat Praveen Jordan and Melati Oktavianti 21-19, 9-21, 21-12.

Sudirman Cup 2021 LIVE: In securing the momentous victory, Malaysia will face Japan in the semi-finals, who eased past Chinese Taipei 3-1.

The other quarter-finals saw China and South Korea qualify for the semi-finals.

Japan and Malaysia won their second matches in Group D of the Sudirman Cup in Vantaa in Finland, with the two nations now set to face each other to determine who finishes top.

Runners-up in 2019, Japan were dominant in their match with England, winning by a 5-0 whitewash.

It started with a mixed doubles win for Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, prevailing by a score of 21-16, 21-12 against Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith

Men’s singles world champion Kento Momota then defeated Johnnie Torjussen 22-20, 21-10.

Akira Koga and Taichi Saito won 21-17, 19-21, 21-12 over Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in the men’s doubles and Akane Yamaguchi made it a fourth victory against Abigail Holden, 21-16, 21-12, in the women’s singles

Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida defeated Chloe Birch and Lauren Smith in the women’s doubles 21-16, 21-12 to round off the tie.

Malaysia thrashed Egypt 5-0 as their opponents struggled throughout.

Chen Tang Jie and Peck Yen Wei started with a mixed doubles victory over Ahmed Salah and Nour Ahmed Youssri, and Ng Tze Yong won in the men’s singles against Mohamed Mostafa Kamel 21-8, 21-2.

Eoon Qi Xuan defeated Doha Hany 21-5, 21-7 in the women’s singles, before Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee won 21-7, 21-6 against Kamel and Salah.

The women’s doubles match completed the tie, in which Teoh Mei Xing and Yap Ling defeated Ahmed Youssri and Hany 21-4, 21-9.

A similar thrashing was handed out in Group B, with South Korea smashing Tahiti 5-0; starting with a 21-1, 21-3 win for Jeon Hyeok-jin against Heiva Yvonet in the men’s singles.

Kim Ga-eun then won 21-5, 21-2 over Heirautea Curet in the women’s singles; and the pairing of Kang Min-hyuk and Kim Won-ho made it three wins in the men’s doubles with a 21-3, 21-7 defeat of Elias Maublanc and Yvonet.

Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan defeated Maeva Gaillard and Jenica Lesourd 21-8, 21-9 in the women’s doubles and Seo Seung-jae and Kim So-yeong won 21-5, 21-7 against Glen Lefoll and Chloe Segrestan in the mixed doubles.

Finally, Chinese Taipei won all five matches against Germany, but faced resistance throughout.

Lee Jhe-Huei and Hsu Ya Ching won 25-23, 11-21, 21-17 against Jan Colin Völker and Linda Efler in the mixed doubles before Chou Tien Chen won 21-14, 17-21, 21-9 over Fabian Roth in the men’s singles.

Pai Yu Po defeated Yvonne Li in the women’s singles 17-21, 21-16, 21-19; and Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan won 21-18, 21-10 in the men’s doubles against Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel.

In the last match of the tie, Hsu Ya Ching and Hu Ling Fang won their women’s doubles match 21-13, 24-22 against Stine Küspert and Emma Moszczynski.
