‘The Fall’, el oscuro thriller con Gillian Anderson y Jaime Dornan que ha entrado en el top 10 de Netflix

En 2014, la televisión británica sorprendía al estrenar ‘The Fall’ (‘La caza’, como se tradujo en España), un thriller oscurísimo y perturbador que contaba la persecución de un asesino en serie desde el punto de vista del asesino y de la inspectora de policía enviada a Belfast para reforzar al equipo investigador. En la última semana, el top 10 de Netflix de sus contenidos más vistos incluye estrenos recientes de series originales suyas, como Jóvenes altezas, Élite o Katla, una película como la primera entrega de La calle del terror o ficciones licenciadas que en la plataforma tienen una segunda vida bastante exitosa. Es el caso de La cocinera de Castamar y, recientemente, también de The Fall, un título con todos los ingredientes para triunfar por su reparto y su temática. La curiosidad es que es de 2013.
Por esos birlibirloques del algoritmo, esta serie de BBC Two, que en España estrenó en su momento AXN, se ha colado entre las tendencias en Netflix por obra y gracia de las recomendaciones basadas en lo que hemos estado viendo, que lo mismo pueden hacerse por género que por actores involucrados. El salto de, por ejemplo, The Crown a The Fall no es tan extraño porque en ambas aparece Gillian Anderson, aunque solo en la segunda es su gran protagonista.
De hecho, su personaje, la policía Stella Gibson, es uno de los papeles femeninos en televisión más complejos de los últimos tiempos. Es enviada a Belfast a revisar la investigación de las muertes de varias jóvenes en sus casas, muertes que apuntan a la actuación de un asesino en serie. Gibson encaja en el molde de las detectives profesionales en posiciones de poder que inauguró la inspectora Tennison en Principal sospechoso, pero se sale también de él al ser muy consciente del efecto que causa en los hombres y el disfrute de su sexualidad.
‘The Fall’ es uno de los trabajos más celebrados de Gillian Anderson.
La serie está creada por un hombre, Allan Cubitt, pero sus tres temporadas están permeadas por el punto de vista femenino que aporta Gibson. Uno de los momentos más célebres de The Fall la enseña citándole a un compañero una famosa frase de Margaret Atwood que apunta que los hombres tienen miedo de que las mujeres se rían de ellos, mientras las mujeres temen que los hombres las maten.
El quid de la serie, no obstante, está en las tramas paralelas de la policía y de Paul Spector, aparentemente un padre de familia perfecto y un psicólogo intachable que oculta un lado muy oscuro que le lleva a acosar, agredir sexualmente y asesinar a mujeres. Spector fue el papel que hizo conocido a Jaime Dornan, que venía de tener un rol secundario en Érase una vez y que, después de The Fall, acabaría siendo elegido como el protagonista de Cincuenta sombras de Grey.
Spector y Gibson funcionan en ocasiones como un espejo: ambos tienen sus obsesiones, se vigilan sin conocerse, tienen un lado que no enseñan en público… Ella, además, cada vez se deja arrastrar más por su empeño por atraparlo, desarrollando una insana fijación que se refleja en las que él siente por sus víctimas.

The Fall no siempre logra mantener el nivel de su primera temporada, especialmente en una tercera que en ocasiones parece extender la historia más de lo necesario. Sus primeros episodios destacaron por la oscuridad de su propuesta y por mostrar el horror de la doble vida que lleva Spector, aparentemente sin dificultad. Además, el retrato de Stella Gibson fue, en su momento, muy significativo en la manera en la que las series estaban presentando a sus protagonistas femeninas: más complejas, con las que es más complicado empatizar y con muchos más matices.

First she fought to keep earth safe from alien life-forms in The X-Files.
Then she passionately headed up the investigation to catch handsome serial killer Paul Spector in The Fall.
And now, the 52-year-old has taken on a new mission particularly close to her heart - and it seems her call to ditch our bras is winning full support, underwired and otherwise.
The actress, who recently portrayed former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in hit show, The Crown, revealed in a recent interview that she is now too “lazy” to wear a bra and finds them uncomfortable.
The British-American star made the revelation while hosting an Instagram Live event, during which she answered various questions from fans.
Asked what her `go-to’ outfits were during lockdown, the star said it was “probably the same one as my out of lockdown outfit.
“I mean, I’ve gotten so lazy and I don’t wear a bra any more. I can’t wear a bra. I can’t, no, I can’t. I’m sorry”.
The X-Files actress then added: “I don’t care if my breasts reach my belly button, I’m not wearing a bra any more. It’s just too uncomfortable.
“So yeah, comfortable black track pants and a matching hoodie. I’d wear that every day if I could”.
Her comments led to a flurry of responses on social media, many from women vowing to join her `no more bras’ campaign.
One person wrote: “If two-time Golden Globe and Emmy winning actress Gillian Anderson says no more bras who are we to disagree?”
Now, let’s all calm down a minute people.
Let’s not make any hasty decisions.
While I’m all for being comfy and feeling confident in our own bodies, for some of us ladies with larger assets, ditching the over-the-shoulder-boulder holder, is simply not that easy.
It’s only in recent years I’ve begun taking my bra off getting into bed.
Up until then, I had constant support.
During the first lockdown there was a lot of discussion from women who had taken to ditching their bras as they were at home and in need of comfort.
But for us ladies with more ample attributes, such a move is just not possible.
I’m really sorry Gillian, I think you’re lovely and a great actress and all but for the sake of the people around me I just can’t ditch my underwired, high impact friend.
If I did, A&E, which is already under pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, would be stretched to breaking point due to the plethora of injuries I would cause - from black eyes to broken bones.
It’s my duty to keep my ladies strapped in and firmly under control - for the sake of others.

Ich gebe zu: Ich liebe es, wie etwa Jack Nicholson mit (fast) jedem seiner Leinwand-Auftritte mehr oder weniger Jack Nicholson mimt. Es kann aber mindestens genauso schön, wenn nicht sogar noch spannender sein, neue überraschende Aspekte im Spiel der von mir favorisierten Darsteller*innen zu entdecken – so auch im Fall von „Fifty Shades Of Grey“-Star Jamie Dornan.
Bevor Dornan als superreicher, umwerfend charismatischer S&M-Connaisseur Christian Grey der globale Durchbruch gelang, verkörperte er auf fast erschreckend glaubhafte Weise einen gnadenlosen Serienkiller in „The Fall - Tod in Belfast“. Mich persönlich hat Dornan mit dieser Rolle bis heute am meisten beeindruckt. Aktuell sind alle drei Staffeln der Serie bei Netflix im Programm.
Darum geht es in “The Fall - Tod in Belfast” auf Netflix
Alle, die ihn kennen, beziehungsweise glauben, dies zu tun, würden Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) als ruhigen, bescheidenen und zuvorkommenden Mann beschreiben. Sie würden sagen, er sei der liebende Ehemann von Sally Ann (Bronagh Waugh), ein fürsorglicher Vater seiner beiden kleinen Kinder und ein erfolgreicher, weil engagiert auf seine Klienten eingehender Psychotherapeut. Was sie alle nicht wissen: Wenn es dunkel wird, mutiert der am Tage noch so harmlos wirkende Spector zum brutalen, rituell vorgehenden Frauenmörder.
Dabei geht er so umsichtig und effizient vor, dass die Polizei von Belfast bis jetzt keine Ahnung hat, wer hinter den Taten stecken könnte. Damit es endlich Fortschritte gibt, holt der Leiter der Mordkommission Burns (John Lynch) die ihm aus seiner Zeit in London bekannte Top-Ermittlerin Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) in die nordirische Hauptstadt, um den einheimischen Kollegen unter die Arme zu greifen. Und tatsächlich kommt Gibson der Identität des Killers schnell näher. Was diesen dazu veranlasst, sich immer besessener auf seine Verfolgerin zu fixieren. Ein perfides Katz-und-Mausspiel beginnt…
Nicht London, sondern Belfast
Erfrischenderweise ist es hier einmal nicht die für BBC-Serien meist als Kulisse herhaltende, britische Hauptstadt oder gegebenenfalls noch Manchester oder Birmingham, die wir als Ort des Geschehens präsentiert bekommen. Es ist Belfast in Nordirland. Ansonsten fast ausschließlich für Verfilmungen von Geschichten rund um den dort über Dekaden ausgetragenen Konflikt zwischen der von den Briten eingesetzten lokalen Regierung und der für einen Anschluss an den Rest Irlands kämpfenden IRA genutzt, zeigt die Stadt ein attraktives, modernes Gesicht. Sie hat in „The Fall“ aber offenbar auch eine düstere Seite.
Helen Sloan Jamie Dornan zeigt sich hier von seiner dunklen, ach was, seiner tiefschwarzen Seite.
Apropos düster: Die Macher der Serie um Erfinder, Produzent, Drehbuchautor und ab der zweiten Staffel Regisseur Allan Cubitt („Heißer Verdacht“) halten sich nicht zurück, wenn es darum geht, Spectors grausame Verbrechen für die Kamera aufzubereiten. Das geschieht allerdings nicht auf eine sensationalisierende oder gar in Richtung Horror tendierende Weise. Vielmehr wirkt das Ganze sachlich-nüchtern und deshalb oft erschütternd authentisch ins Bild gesetzt.
Dadurch und durch das oft geschickt gebremste Erzähltempo und die somit erzeugte Slowburner-Atmosphäre erinnert die 2013 gestartete Serie mehr an skandinavische Thriller-Reihen denn an typisch britische oder gar US-amerikanische Krimi-Kost. Dabei wurde dem Ganzen ein individueller Charme beziehungsweise Look verpasst und sich nicht einfach nur plump an nordische Hits wie „Die Brücke - Transit in den Tod“, „Mankells Wallander“ oder „Kommissarin Lund“ drangehängt.
Und dann wäre da ja auch noch Gillian Anderson…
Für diese Eigenständigkeit sorgen nicht nur die unverbrauchten Locations und die oft sehr dicht herangehende, so gelegentlich für eine nahezu körperliche Intensität sorgende Kameraarbeit, sondern zudem die durch die Bank glaubhaft agierenden Darsteller. Neben Dornan, dessen finsteres Schauspiel den Zuschauer*innen kalte Schauer über den Rücken jagt, wäre da natürlich der einstige „Akte X“-Star Gillian Anderson zu nennen. Die seit 20 Jahren in Großbritannien lebende und kürzlich mit einem Golden Globe für ihre Arbeit an „The Crown“ ausgezeichnete Chicagoerin legt ihre Rolle sehr selbstbewusst und kompetent, aber durchaus auch emotional an, so dass wir uns schnell und gern mit ihr identifizieren.

„The Fall“ ist eine clever geschriebene und eigenständig umgesetzte Thriller-Serie, die nicht gerade leichte Kost bietet. Weshalb sie zu schade ist, um sie einfach so nebenher wegzuschauen. Es lohnt sich hier wirklich, ein paar Abende zu investieren. Denn obwohl wir von Anfang an wissen, wer der Täter ist, wird die Spannungsschraube immer wieder geschickt angezogen. Ich empfehle die Reihe staffelweise zu schauen, da diese inhaltlich jeweils auf einen finalen Höhepunkt hinarbeitend konzipiert sind.
Erfreulich ist zudem, dass die Serie mit dem Ende der dritten Season einen echten Abschluss findet und nicht etwa in einem niemals aufgelösten Cliffhanger endet wie manch andere. Krimi-Fans sollten also unbedingt mal reinschauen, ob auf Netflix oder via DVD/Blu-ray bleibt euch überlassen. Aber wundert euch nicht, wenn ihr danach Jamie Dornan in seiner nächsten Rolle erst einmal mit Misstrauen begegnet. Denn er ist verdammt überzeugend als ebenso berechnender wie brutaler Creep.
