(ABC4) – The final podiums are being filled in Tokyo after two packed weeks of Olympic drama. If the medal chase has inspired you to train for Team USA, you had better get to work. Our next Olympic Games are less than six months away.

The International Olympic Committee has already identified host cities for a handful of the upcoming games, so if you have your sites set on future games — or are just eager to take in the scenery on TV — here’s where we can expect to see the Olympic flame reside in the years ahead.

Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and will play host again in 2022. Beijing has state-of-the-art venues from the 2008 Olympic Games and even an adorable mascot — Bing Dwen Dwen is a large-eyed panda bear that wears a shell made out of ice who “embodies the strength and willpower of athletes and will help to promote the Olympic spirit,” according to the IOC’s website.

But not everything about Beijing hosting the Olympics is as cute and cuddly as their mascot.

According to an Associated Press article, China is one the world’s radar for human rights abuses, including accusations against the country concerning genocide against over 1 million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim ethnic groups. Olympic athletes concerned with the social issues are speaking out.

There is also some fear that reporters who delve deeper than sports and cover life in China could face threats and harassment.

The games will run from February 4, 2022, through February 20, 2022.

The City of Light has hosted the Olympic Games in 1900 and 1924. The 2024 Summer Olympics will make the city a three-time host of the games.

Paris aims to host a sustainable Olympics, one that aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. According to the IOC’s website, that commitment includes 100% of spectators traveling to Olympic venues on foot, bike, or public transport.

Competitive breakdancers will get their chance to shine in Paris, too. The activity will make its debut as an official Olympic sport in the 2024 Summer Games.

The games will take place from July 26, 2024, through Aug. 11, 2024.

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games will take place in this mountainous area of Northern Italy.

Ski mountaineering will debut as an official Olympic sport at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The program will include five new medal events, including two men’s events, two women’s events, and one mixed gender relay event.

After a worldwide public vote for the official emblem of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of Milano Cortina 2026, “Futura” was chosen. The emblem represents sustainability and legacy — core values of the 2026 Winter Games. It has also adopted the colors of the natural light phenomenon that occurs over the Dolomite mountains in the Northern Italian Alps.

The games will begin on Feb. 6, 2026, and run through Feb. 22, 2026.

The City of Angels is no rookie when it comes to hosting the Olympic Games, having hosted both the 1932 and 1984 games. The city will join London and Paris in hosting the Summer Games for the third time.

The Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games LA 2028 is investing $9.6 million to promote youth sports in Los Angeles following the pandemic, with an emphasis in low-income areas.

“There’s never been a more important time to get kids back to sports,” said LA28 Chief Athlete Officer and five-time Olympic medalist Janet Evans. “After an incredibly trying 15 months, it’s time to get out there and play. Fitness and competition give kids opportunities to connect with friends and improve their physical and mental health. We couldn’t be more excited to get kids back on the field and in the gym experiencing the joy of sport.”

The Olympic Village will be housed within the University of California Los Angeles. The games will run from July 21, 2028, through Aug. 6, 2028.

Australians are clearly fans of the Olympic Games, being one of only two countries in the world that has sent athletes to every Olympic Games in modern history, and having hosted the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 and in Sydney in 2000.

Leading up to the Olympic Games, the country will host other major international sporting events such as the FIBA Women’s World Cup in basketball and the UCI Road World Championships in cycling in 2022.

The Brisbane games will run from July 23, 2032, through Aug. 8, 2032.

The Games to change the Games: Paris 2024 lays out innovative Olympic plan

img ]

TOKYO — The 2020 Summer Olympics will always be remembered for the pandemic that first delayed them and then contained them. This was a walled off Games, bubbled up and closed out.

No fans in the stands. No tourists in the streets. You can walk through the center of Tokyo and not even know the Olympics are happening — no signage, no crowds, no excitement. It’s like a television show that is getting filmed somewhere near here.

The way things are going, the 2022 Winter Games, set for Beijing, China, in February, aren’t likely to be much different.

As such, there is no better time to look ahead to the inventive ideas and open concepts that will inspire the next big — and hopefully the first post-COVID — Olympics, Paris 2024.

Organizers say their goal is to make the Olympics as accessible to the public as possible, to unite the city and its people to the athletes and events in ways never before considered.

The biggest proposed change is to ditch the traditional concept of the Opening Ceremony. Rather than hold an elaborate, made-for-TV show inside the Stade de France, the French want to take the show on the road … or river.

The plan is to have the athlete delegations ride boats down the River Seine, which runs through the center of the city, including past landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre and so much more.

It’s estimated 300,000 or more fans could line the river to greet and cheer them.

“Delegations arrive in Paris by boat and cross this iconic city,” Tony Estanguet, the president of Paris 2024 said. “Hundreds of thousands of fans welcoming them. That would be amazing.”

Different elements of the ceremony could occur in different parts of the city.

“A very open ceremony in the heart of the city,” said Paris mayor Anne Hildago.

After all, if you have Paris as a backdrop then you should use Paris as your backdrop.

“It is our main asset,” Estanguet said.

The concept is still being studied. A final determination isn’t expected for months, but the will to pull it off is there. Everything is being reconsidered by the French. And everything is about trying to include the public in the Olympics.

Story continues

“I think the Games should be open to everyone,” said Estanguet, who won gold in canoeing at three different Olympics (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, London 2012).

“This is the innovation to open the doors of the Games,” Estanguet continued. “We believe the Opening Ceremony is the biggest symbol of the game. This is the right moment to reconsider the welcoming of the athletes.”

Or reconsider the marathon, one of the Olympics’ ancient ties.

In Paris, the goal is to stage the event for the Olympic athletes in the morning, and then as soon as possible that same day, hold a public marathon for qualified amateur runners who can then traverse the exact same course and cross the exact same finish line.

There also could be shorter distances — a half marathon, a 10K, a 5K — for runners of different levels as a way to promote an active lifestyle for all.

A similar deal is expected to be set up for some of the cycling courses.

Really, everything is on the table. Could the beach volleyball — expected to be in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower — get turned over to the public immediately? Is there a way to bring the public onto the 3x3 basketball courts? Can skateboarding happen in a place where kids currently skateboard?

Whatever they can think up will be considered.

“We need to have the balance of the traditions of the Olympics with creativity and innovation,” Estanguet said.

By 2024, with — again hopefully — the ability to invite the entire world to come play in Paris together, these might be the Games that change everything about the Olympics.

The Summer Olympics are a major multi-sport event that takes place every four years. The best athletes in the world compete against each other individually or in a team, in a range of different sports.

The Summer Olympics often feature gymnastics, track and field, aquatics, boxing, boxing, archery, soccer, handball, basketball, tennis, and many other sports. The Olympics totaled 42 sports in one era or another. The 2020 Summer Games will be held from 23 July to August 8, 2021, in Tokyo, Japan.

They were planned for July 24 to August 9, 2020, but they eventually got postponed as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although the event was delayed for 2021, it still retains the name Tokyo 2020 for marketing and naming reasons. The Olympics were not annulled but they were postponed for the first time in its 124-year history.

The 2024 Summer Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024, in Paris, France. Paris, which previously hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924, will become the second city in history to hold the Olympics three times, following London (1908, 1948, and 2012). The centennial of the Paris Games in 1924, as well as France’s sixth Olympic Games, will be celebrated in 2024.

The bidding process for the Summer Olympics in 2024 began in 2015. Paris won the privilege to host the Games over four other cities: Hamburg, Rome, Budapest, and Los Angeles. After Hamburg, Rome, and Budapest withdrew their bids, in 2017, the IOC approved Paris and Los Angeles to host the 2024 and the 2028 Olympics respectively.

In addition to the new debutant sports, such as breakdancing, surfing, ski climbing, and skateboarding, the organizing committee of Paris stated in 2019, that it would propose breaking as a new sport for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The IOC agreed for all five sports to be included in the 2024 Paris Games. 32 sports including 329 events will be part of the 2024 Olympic program.
