INDIANAPOLIS — A shooting at a KFC on Indy’s near north side has claimed one life.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred just after noon in the 2400 block of N. Meridian Street in a KFC parking lot located near 24th and Meridian St.
Police say officers arrived and located a man with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). The victim was originally reported to be in critical condition but later died from his injuries.
A person of interest has been detained, according to police.
“I cannot say if it’s an employee or a customer. It’s too early on in the investigation,” said Patrolman William Young of IMPD. “We believe there’s no immediate threat to the area. We believe that we have everyone contained that includes the person of interest and our witnesses.”
Surveillance cameras mounted on the side of the restaurant appear to be positioned to capture the shooting as a man also showed investigators video from his cellphone.
“Preliminary investigation leads us to believe that some sort of disturbance occurred inside of the business that followed or led outside of the business where shots were fired. Too early to say if those shots were fired inside of the business, but we preliminarily believe those shots were fired outside of the business,” said Young.
“I believe that the business is cooperating with this. Not only is it important that we get surveillance from the business itself, but residential — lots of folks have cell phones.”
Last week, one employee is alleged to have shot another at a McDonald’s near the intersection of East 38th Street and North Keystone Avenue, leaving one woman hospitalized in critical condition and another jailed on a charge of aggravated battery.
“Folks have got to learn how to deal with conflict resolution without picking up a firearm and hurting someone,” said Young.
Sunday’s killing marks the 198 homicide in Indianapolis this year compared to 170 on this date a year ago when the city was on its way to shattering the annual homicide record.
The New York Times reports that FBI crime statistics, due to be released Monday, indicate murder rose nationally 29% last year over 2019’s numbers.
“I’ve talked to several colleagues throughout the country in cities of this size,” said Young, “and they’re going through the same exact thing where again folks are picking up or turning to gun violence to resolve conflicts.”
